Mevagissey is a charming and unspoilt fishing village on the south coast of Cornwall, located just 5 miles from St Austell and within easy reach of both the Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan. Rich in history, the village has long-standing traditions of boat building and smuggling, and still retains its authentic Cornish character today.
Visitors can explore the fascinating local museum, which offers a wealth of insight into the area’s heritage, or enjoy a visit to the FREE Sea Aquarium on the harbour side — always a hit with children. Mevagissey also boasts a wide selection of excellent Cornish pubs, where you can sample traditional ales and warm local hospitality, along with plenty of restaurants perfect for lunch or dinner.
Just a short distance away, The Lost Gardens of Heligan are among the most popular botanical gardens in the UK. These beautifully restored gardens feature impressive collections of mature rhododendrons and camellias, peaceful lakes powered by a historic ram pump, productive flower and vegetable gardens, an Italian garden, and the atmospheric “Jungle” filled with towering sub-tropical tree ferns. Be sure not to miss the famous Mud Maid and the Giant’s Head.
Nearby, the Eden Project is set within a 160-year-old reclaimed china clay quarry at Bodelva, near St Austell. Created as part of the UK’s Millennium celebrations, it has become one of the country’s most iconic attractions. Visitors should allow around four to five hours to fully explore its remarkable biomes and exhibits.
